America stumbles through another year, spreading chaos and trivia everywhere in its path

America stumbles through another year, spreading chaos and trivia everywhere in its path. America sows chaos

By John Chuckman

The Palestinians are seeking a vote in the United Nations' Security Council on a resolution favoring their statehood, unquestionably a reasonable proposal in the minds of most of the world's people. Of course, the United States, a permanent member of the Security Council, would automatically veto such a resolution, as it vetoes all efforts to restore order to the chaos of the Middle East. And of course, were such a resolution somehow miraculously to pass, Israel would simply ignore it, as it has ignored a long list of binding UN resolutions. But a veto and certain contempt are not enough for an upright, God-fearing Southern gentleman like US Senator Lindsey Graham. He busied himself recently with threatening America's withholding funds from a United Nations that gets involved in the "peace process." Imagine, the United Nations getting involved in peace? That is a chilling thought. Since the United States has a history of withholding its UN dues against its solemn treaty obligations to bully its way to certain changes, such threats do carry weight.

Senator Graham, regarded neither as an idealist nor a  voice for peace, is only doing what so many American politicians do under the unbelievably corrupt, money-drenched American election system, and that is to make ridiculous public statements about the Middle East in return for generous dollops of campaign funds from the world's most tireless political lobby, that for Israel. You might think that the lobby itself would tire of funding backwater blowhards demanding the other ninety-five percent of humanity play the game by America's rules or America is picking up its marbles or chips or whatever and going home, but clearly it does not.

"The peace process" is the longest running farce on the planet, continuing for nearly fifty years. It might have been funny in the vein of The Mouse That Roared, but there is nothing remotely funny in the killing of thousands of people and the extreme abuse and hopelessness of millions. You just could not make a worse hash of a diplomatic and human welfare situation than America has made in the Middle East. And the situation has only intensified in its cruelty and injustice. Today, Israel openly and regularly steals homes in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. It threatens ancient Muslim shrines and desecrates some of them. It has savaged Gaza, the world's largest open-air prison camp, twice, killing close to four thousand including nearly a thousand children. It has attempted to starve Gaza's people out with a years-long embargo, and is making ugly noises about still another invasion. It is about to steal Syrian oil on the occupied Golan Heights, drilling there illegally, and it is busy arranging the theft of offshore natural gas that belongs to Gaza and Lebanon. It does all of this with complete impunity and not even a cross word from the likes of Senator Graham. I do think the Middle East provides the strongest possible evidence of the complete unsuitability of the United States to play a dominant role in international affairs. It is genuinely a case of the inmates running the asylum.

In another example of chaos mixed with farce, the United States pretends to fight ISIS in Iraq and Syria, and while that charade continues, planes loaded with American weapons keep flying out of Turkey to make the seeming lunatics even stronger. Indeed, the various ragtag factions trying to overthrow the Syrian government, cutthroats assembled by the US and its friends from all corners of the globe in a kind of hellish foreign legion, announced a new alliance, so telling Washington's approved terrorists in the conflict from those who haven't made the cut is more difficult than ever. Recently, one or another of the lunatic mobs shot down two fighter jets, and how do you think they managed that without American anti-aircraft missiles? Turkey's certifiably unbalanced president, Tayyip Erdoğan, one day makes fiery speeches threatening Israel (to please the poor fools voting for him) and the next makes new secret deals with Israel. Remember, this is a man who just built a one-thousand room palace for himself - yes, that's right, exactly one thousand rooms - and it is the ugliest, most pointless large structure built since the early Soviet era, a kind of gigantic sprawling warehouse incrusted with jewels and filled with porcelain.

Well, dippiness is no barrier to membership in a secret club in the region which includes the UAE, Saudia Arabia, and Israel, all lovingly assisted by the US. They are all governments who regard change as desirable only when it results in an even more rigid status quo, as in Egypt.  Never mind the welfare of the region's people or democracy or human rights or national boundaries. These guys resemble twelfth century lords seeing paupers cross their paths: they run them down and proceed to a rollicking good dinner in the great hall. The club is all about security for hereditary monarchs, security for America's crusader fortress colony in the Middle East, and security for helper states in the American agenda. We've had many reports recently of secret air-freight flights between Tel Aviv and Abu Dhabi. We also have reports of flights out of Turkey into Syria. The never explained events at Benghazi were undoubtedly blowback from an operation collecting unemployed thugs and arms for secret shipment to Turkey and then into Syria. Saudi Arabia is voluntarily taking a bath by pushing oil prices down, a favor to the US and Israel and Turkey and a way of hurting Russia, Iran, Syria, and even Venezuela - all current members in good standing of Captain America's ever-changing galaxy of villains - aka, the Axis of Evil. The US is willing to sacrifice for the time being its booming shale oil industry, whose more costly production requires higher prices than Saudi conventional crude, in return for the Saudi sacrifice.

Since both countries are desperate to hurt Russia, Iran, and Syria, the deal is a marriage made in Realpolitik heaven. Russia has helped Syria and does business with Iran, and Saudi Arabia and Israel hate Iran and Syria. The US has made a large investment in toppling Syria for Israel's benefit, but the plan has been thwarted by Syrian endurance and Russian help. The plan also overlooked the loyalty of important Syrian societal groups to President Assad, but America often overlooks details as it attempts to reshape the world to its liking with bombs. Of course, there was also the precedent of Iraq, a bloody fiasco that achieved nothing but a million deaths and splintering a country into pieces. That splintering, by the way, continues with the ISIS fiasco: Iraq's Kurds are being used against ISIS to strengthen their own region's quasi-independence from Iraq.

You become a terrorit if you oppose interests of America and Israel

The chaos the secret club-member countries have created in Syria - perhaps 200,000 killed and a couple of million refugees - appears not to bother them in the least, just so many paupers in the roadway when galloping home to dinner at the great hall. The victims do provide useful free material for the propaganda war being waged, the understanding implicit in America's and Canada's and Europe's press being always that President Assad is responsible for the catastrophe. The US, and cheerleaders on the sidelines like Canada's current dismal right-wing government, are doing virtually nothing for the refugees, or for the many civilians crippled or wounded. Ironically, Israel actually accepts for treatment in its northern medical facilities some of the very fanatics wounded in the dirty work. After all, it is ultimately Israel's dirty work they do, regardless of their fanaticism. It's a phenomenon we might call selective terrorism: fanatical killers who do America's work, or Israel's, are not treated as terrorists at all. No matter how many women and children you kill, no matter how many places you bomb, you only become a terrorist if you oppose the interests of America or Israel.

The toll in killed and wounded and homeless in Eastern Ukraine continues to mount. New punitive measures come regularly from Kiev, undoubtedly with American advice about possible vulnerabilities - after all, a top cabinet minister in the coup-created government is American. Only the other day we read reports of Ukrainian militia-types, the kind of right-wing thugs who helped the US overthrow an elected government in Kiev, blocking food traffic into the East. Attempting to starve people into submission is defined in international law as a war crime, but we hear no word of concern from America, just as we heard no word of concern for Israel's original blockade of Gaza which actually included a calculated level of calories intended to just keep the population alive (since modified under intense secret international pressure).

In all these induced chaotic situations, we hear little or nothing from the UN, an institution which should be among the first condemning aggressive behavior. But the UN, despite the many differing private views of its members, is now in all official capacities under the thumb of the US. Its current Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, a candidate favored by America, is ineffectual and behaves at times almost as though he headed an organization having nothing to do with peace or human rights.

Well, there is some intimidating history. Boutros Boutros-Ghali was the only UN secretary-general not to be elected to a second term in office, and the reason was an American plan to be rid of him, one of Madeleine Albright's glorious career achievements. America vetoed his second term because it was most unhappy when he did not embrace the bombing of Bosnia, and they disliked other of his views which tended to be thoughtful and compassionate. Earlier, Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, a much admired man, was assassinated in an engineered plane crash, said to have been the work of Belgian mining companies unhappy with the UN's policies in Congo, a place the mining companies had drained of wealth for decades of brutal exploitation, but I think it unlikely anything of that nature happened without at least a nod of approval from Washington, which after all was a major customer for the products of Congo.

The evidence is piling up, despite delays and many irregularities in the official investigation into the crash of airline Flight MH-17 in Ukraine, that a Ukrainian pilot deliberately shot the plane down. His fighter is said to have been armed with air-to-air missiles on take-off, something completely out-of-the-ordinary in the conflict since Eastern Ukrainians have no air force. It returned, according to an eye-witness, with no missiles and the pilot's muttering cryptic phrases. Of course, this would be the kind of act you might expect from people who used sniper rifles earlier this year to kill many hundreds of civilians in Maidan, the central square of Kiev, in order to terrorize the population and start the coup. But where is America's voice in these grotesque doings? As Russia has patiently pointed out, an American spy satellite was virtually overhead at the time of the crash, so definitive evidence exists without a doubt but is not produced. But then neither is it produced for the destruction of Flight MH-370 in the Indian Ocean, an event it is virtually certain was the work of American forces at the secret Diego Garcia base as the plane came their way for whatever unknown reason.

What kind of world does America want to live in?

The irregularities around Flight MH-17's investigation include Malaysia, owners of the airline, being excluded from the group conducting the investigation and include the fact that segments of the wreckage were left behind at the crash site, and that after taking a very long time to get there in the first place, making manipulation of forensic evidence possible and even likely. We also have the absence of any American satellite or radar records, and we have not a word about the autopsy on the pilot, something which might solve the entire mystery, as from the discovery of Ukrainian missile fragments in his body.

What kind of world do we want to live in? One where coups and civil wars are engineered for the pleasure of others? One where airliners full of people are shot down deliberately? This is the chaos, and just part of it, America has bestowed upon us in the twenty-first century. I won't even go into the financial tsunami it created in 2008 with the same lack of caution for others and concern about doing things correctly. The full impact of that has yet to strike us all.

But America brings laughable trivia, too. The President of the United States spending time and breath on the hacking of a private company's web site? A Japanese company, no less? And turning the relatively trivial business of hacking, which happens every day now somewhere, into an international incident by blaming, almost certainly incorrectly, North Korea?

The President said the FBI had investigated and assured him that North Korea was responsible. What he didn't tell us was that the FBI has a decades-long record of being wrong, seriously wrong, a great deal of the time. Given the FBI's history, it certainly is in the running for the title of Most Incompetent Security Organization in the Western World, although, like other national security institutions in the United States, it is grossly over-funded with money gushing out like water from broken plumbing. Americans pay more per unit of misinformation than likely any other people on the planet.

Anyone familiar with the record of the FBI listens to assurances like the President's with a sarcastic smile at best (see FOOTNOTE for a partial list of the FBI's viciousness and incompetence over the years). Shortly after the president's silly words, we had several world-class tech experts tell us why it could not have been North Korea, and I'll take bets against the FBI on this one from anyone.

It likely was someone at Sony doing a publicity stunt to promote what by all reports is a dud of a film, but why should the man with the biggest job in the world join in? Consider also the fact that if you make what can be viewed as a threatening comment or presentation of any kind against the President of the United States, you will be visited and interviewed by the Secret Service, who will then keep you on file permanently. Why is it okay to make a movie about the assassination of North Korea's president then, the subject of The Interview? Sony certainly has right to do stupidly foolish things, but it is more than a little muddled for the President eagerly to support it. Will he now address the rights of porn actors in California to work without condoms?

As I write this, a British newspaper reports that some Sony employees have been quietly dismissed. Reported also is the discovery of a web site strongly suggesting disgruntled employees. See what I mean about America overlooking the facts before it acts?

FOOTNOTE ON HOW WRONG AND DISHONEST THE FBI HAS BEEN: The FBI was wrong in claiming there was no such thing as the Mafia, something J. Edgar Hoover insisted for many years while he gambled at their racetracks and stayed at their resorts for free, some biographers believing Hoover had been compromised by the Mafia with photos of his secret gay, cross-dressing life. The FBI was wrong in focusing huge resources for many years on the pathetic American Communist Party, half of whose small membership is said to have consisted of FBI agents. The FBI was wrong about the threat of Albert Einstein, seeking his extradition for a time and checking the contents of his garbage to his dying day. The FBI was wrong about the danger of Dr. Martin Luther King, and it played judge and jury with his personal life. The FBI was wrong about Dr. Wen Ho Lee of Los Alamos being a spy, although it ruined his career. The FBI was wrong about the crash of TWA Flight 800, taking an inordinate amount of time trying to let public interest cool and avoid the obvious fact that the crash was an accidental shoot-down by the American military, there being a radar track showing something like a missile rising towards the plane. Despite its vast resources, the FBI never saw 9/11 coming. One of its own senior agents, Robert Hanssen, was one of the more damaging spies of modern times, a man whose carelessness in many details, classic indicators of a paid spy, went unnoticed for years. The FBI was wrong in the Atlanta Olympic bombing, ruining the life of another innocent man. It couldn't have been more wrong in its handling of the sad kooks at Waco, effectively murdering them all. So, too, at the Ruby Ridge standoff where an FBI sniper killed a woman and her child needlessly. The FBI Crime Labs were cited in the 1990s by the Inspector General for misconduct and manipulating evidence, something many had suspected for years. The FBI specialized for years in hurting the reputations of those it didn't like or those it merely suspected, as by asking questions at their place of work and neighborhood, not have any proof of wrong-doing. The FBI, at least under J. Edgar Hoover, held career-threatening information obtained by spying over the heads of many prominent congressmen and government leaders, effectively blackmailing them to do its bidding. It did the same with non-government officials where it felt so inclined. The FBI was wrong about the assassination of President Kennedy, it being the only investigative agency for the lamentable, embarrassing Warren Commission, thereby assuming at least equal responsibility for its inaccurate, dishonest report. Indeed, the FBI did not reveal at the time that Oswald secretly worked for them as a paid informant (since documented). It also lied about evidence a senior FBI agent destroyed after the assassination, a note Oswald had written.

Kids Won’t Sleep? Try These Sleep Apps!

We know kids should avoid screen time before bed so they can calm their mind and get ready for a good nights sleep. But many parents have major sleep battles before bedtime and are willing to try anything to send their little angels off to la la land.

Instead of bedtime being dreaded by everyone in the household, what if it was a time of happiness and cuddles? Does that sound too good to be true?
Here are some tried and tested sleep aid apps for babies and little kids.

Sleepy Sounds
This free app features gentle lullabies, white noise and soothing sounds to calm a restless babe. Lovely, simple, repetitive animations help to gently light up a dark room.

AmbiScience Sleep Aid for Children
This is science, people! If you know what "binaural and isochronic entrainment" means, then good for you. For the rest of us, this app mixes two tones that are sent to each ear. The gentle white noise mix creates a pulsating effect and a frequency that will tell brain waves to slow down and chill out. It’s a sort of meditation for kids. Brush teeth, read a book, put this app on and back out slowly.

Goodnight Safari
This is a very beautiful, interactive app where kids help to put the African animals to bed. Help the giraffe eat her dinner, get the monkey to climb into bed, and help the elephant kiss goodnight. The animations, sounds and narration are sweet and soothing and help to create a bedtime routine for kids. It’s wind down time on the Savannah. This is a great app for pre-schoolers.

Nighty Night
Another lovely one for preschoolers, Nighty Night is a gentle, repetitive app which gets kids to say good night to the animals on the farm. Tap out the light in the barn, turn off the light in the kennel and put the chickens to sleep. The narration and animation are so beautiful; they will make you calm and sleepy too. Blending storytelling, animation and interactivity, this app is a perfect one to bring you close and have snuggles at bedtime.

Sydney Sheikh believed responsible for Syrian massacres, kidnappings

Sydney Sheikh believed responsible for Syrian massacres, kidnappings. 54267.jpeg

Researchers, officials and residents hold Sydney Sheikh Fedaa Majzoub responsible for two appalling massacres and kidnappings in Northern Syria. Worse, the sectarian sheikh has for some time enjoyed protection from the Australian media as well as from some political figures.

 By Tim Anderson

Majzoub has been implicated in the mass atrocities at Ballouta and Kessab, both near the Turkish border.  In Ballouta (August 2013) around 200 villagers were killed and another 200 kidnapped, by a combination of FSA and al Nusra jihadists. The same groups invaded the mainly Armenian Christian border town of Kessab (March 2014), killing 80 people and desecrating churches.

Syrian officials have identified Fedaa Majzoub as a key organiser of the Ballouta atrocities and he has admitted involvement in the Kessab kidnappings, suggesting however that they were humanitarian 'evacuations'. The only Australian member of the now defunct Syrian National Council (SNC), Majzoub remains a member of the NSW branch of the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC). The ANIC has made no statement on his activities in Syria.

Fedaa's younger brother Mustapha was killed in August 2012, in an area near jihadist-occupied Selma, in northern Syria. At that time the Australian media mostly repeated the family's claim that he had gone to Syria for humanitarian or religious purposes. Other evidence makes it clear, however, that he joined sectarian jihadists. On his Facebook page, before his death, he expressed great joy that '72 from the shabeeha [Alawi or loyal government supporters] have just been captured in the Kurd mountains in Latakia. It's going off everywhere, Allahu Akbar.' One of his friends asked 'Have they been slaughtered yet?'

Nevertheless, the Arabic language newspaper An-Nahar (27/08/12) published a statement from the then NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell, mourning the death of 'respected cleric' Mustapha Majzoub. This was despite the fact that, five days earlier, The Australian newspaper had quoted intelligence sources saying that Mustapha was 'known to law enforcement and the intelligence community for extremist views'. Indeed, the younger Majzoub's public lectures had vilified the minority Alawite community as 'enemies against Islam', calling for 'the highest level of jihad' against them.

Sheikh Fedaa Majzoub is every bit as sectarian as was his little brother. US citizen Lily Martin Sahiounie, married into a Muslim family and resident in northern Syria for decades, used to live next door to the Majzoub family. She says Fedaa preached "sectarian hatred ... a basic Wahhabi, al Qaeda type of radical Islam".

Regardless of this, the Tel Aviv based correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald, Ruth Pollard, went to visit Fedaa Majzoub in Salma - a visit which necessarily required illegal, jihadist-hosted entry into Syria. In a puff piece she spoke of Fedaa as an 'honest broker' who was attempting to 'build bridges' between the SNC and the Free Syrian Army (FSA).

Much of the Australian corporate media remained protective of Fedaa, even after the Syrian Government accused him of direct involvement in the Ballouta atrocity.

In December 2013 Syria's Communications Minister Omran al Zoubi told an Australian delegation, of which I was a member, that 'the jihadist Sheikh Fedaa al Majzoub is responsible for the kidnapping of 106 people and, unfortunately, he was using Australian telephone networks. The worst of this is that the Australian Government is well aware of this. But it has turned a blind eye.'

The Ballouta massacre and kidnappings was even documented by the Washington-based Human Rights Watch, which usually moves in lock-step with the Obama White House, blaming the Syrian Government for all crimes and shielding the so-called 'moderate rebels'.

Lily Martin Sahiounie was very close to this massacre. She says:

'In August 2013, Radical Islamic terrorists entered at night the sleeping village of Ballouta ... They went methodically from house to house killing men, women and children in their beds. They cut open the stomach of a pregnant woman and hung the fetus in the trees.  Many survivors ran for their lives and later gave their eye witness reports of what happened.  The Radical Islamic terrorists kidnapped 100 small children, and a few older females ... [they were held] in a basement underground in the Syrian village of Selma'.

Lily notes that 44 of the Ballouta children were released in a mid-2014 prisoner swap, nine months later. Many are believed still held in Selma, to this day. From evidence of those released:

'they endured torture, abuse and some of the children [were] killed by the terrorists.  They said their captors were a mixed group: some were Syrian and many were foreigners ... several of the terrorists spoke Arabic ... [but] also spoke English much of the time among themselves'.

Two reports have emerged (ISTEAMS and Mesler) saying it was videos of these children, drugged and held hostage in Selma, that were sent to jihadists in the East Ghouta (rural Damascus), to be uploaded and used in the infamous chemical weapons incident two weeks later. No trace was ever found of the bodies of the children said to have been gassed in the East Ghouta. Relatives of the kidnaped children remain too scared to speak out, because of those still held hostage.

Independent journalist Chris Ray told The Australian of Minister al Zoubi's accusations against Fedaa and reported in more depth at Crikey (09/01/14). But the Minister's accusation was heavily re-spun in an Australian headline (02/12/14): 'The respected Aussie imam smeared by the Assad regime'. Anti-Syrian politics stopped them from denouncing an Aussie terrorist.

Fedaa was contacted and his denial quoted by The Australian the next day (03/01/14): 'Sheik Majzoub told The Australianthese civilians were still being held hostage within Syria, and their captors were hoping to negotiate an exchange for other prisoners held by the regime. 'I heard about it, I know about it but I was not involved in it at all', he said. He claimed he had been in Europe, working on preparations for the Geneva peace talks.

In March 2014 another massacre and kidnapping took place in the Armenian Christian town of Kessab, as thousands of jihadists from FSA, al Nusra and other jihadist groups poured into the little border town, with obvious support from Turkish troops. Multiple accounts say that dozens were killed, churches were desecrated and many more kidnapped and taken to Turkey.

Time magazine tried to spin the invasion as a non-sectarian 'military offensive', with the Syrian army 'indiscriminately bombarding' the town. Their headline (27/03/14) was kind to the al Qaeda cut-throats: 'Rebels reassure Christians after capturing key Syrian border town'.

Fedaa Majzoub is said to have admitted his involvement in the Kessab kidnappings, in an interview with Turkish writer Yusuf Selman İnanç. His report in a Malaysian newspaper says:

'I interviewed one of the top officials of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), Fedaa Majzoub, who organized the evacuation of the Armenians from the town, first to a safe village and finally to Turkey. He said, "Opposition groups have nothing to do with the Armenian population. We captured the town as a part of our war strategy. We are trying to go down to Latakia to increase the pressure on Damascus. Young Armenians and Arabs left the town. We helped the old people and sent them to Turkey".'

However Armenian news agency reports say 2,000 people from over 600 families fled their homes in advance of the invasion. The Armenian National Committee International said it had warned of just this sort of attack 'for months'. Their reports say 'three days of brutal cross-border attacks from Turkey, by al-Qaeda affiliated armed bands ... have cost 80 lives and forced the civilian population of the area to flee to the neighbouring hills, with many seeking safe haven in ... Latakia and Basit.'

Lily Martin Sahiounie owns a house in Kessab, and says it was destroyed. 'I was in Kassab on June 17th ... 2 days after liberation ... all three churches were destroyed ... they [had] lit huge bonfires and burnt the entire interior of the church ... [the village] was not bombed from the air ... it was damaged by street fighting ... [and from] vandalism by the terrorists ... [including graffiti] threats like 'Be Muslim or Die'.'

Irish academic Dr Declan Hayes also visited Kessab, in August, with Syrian colleagues. He mostly confirms the Armenian news reports. 'Kessab was [still] covered in intimidating graffiti .. the town was systematically robbed ... Not only were the churches vandalised with crosses and the like removed but the rebels lit tyres in the churches ... there was wide scale vandalism to the graveyard ... sending out a strong message that Armenians have no future in the areas they [the jihadists] control ... though [some elderly people] do confirm that they were well treated in Turkey, they also confirm that none of them wished to be 'liberated' by these rebels ... [or] moved to Turkey.'

In Kessab Dr Hayes and his colleagues found a letter written (in English) by an Australian jihadist to his family, indicating there was at least one other Australian involved in that attack.

Lily says: 'the 24 elderly people were first held hostage in Kessab for 11 days ... then moved from Kessab to Vikify (Turkey) ... the [same] day that Ahmed Jarba [the US-backed opposition leader] arrived ... Kessab had no military significance ... I believe that Fedaa Majzoub plotted to keep those 24 elderly people hostage, [so] they could later use them in a prisoner exchange.'

During the occupation of Kessab, Majzoub was involved in setting up a new religious group in Turkey, which he insisted was non-political. Despite his own recent background in the SNC and the FSA, he claimed the Syrian Islamic Council was 'a religious reference body without any political agenda'. However the group's President Osama Rifai said the group wanted to 'help assure stability in the country "after Assad falls" '.

Lily Martin Sahiounie has complained about her own [US] government's involvement in the attacks on Syria and is furious at the Australian involvement in these atrocities. She says: 'Radical Islam is alive and well in Sydney.  It is so well cultivated there, that they even export it. Yet while the Australian media had non-stop coverage of the siege and resulting death of two persons in Sydney, they have not mentioned the innocent unarmed Syrian civilians maimed, killed and kidnapped by well-known extremist Muslim residents of Sydney.' She says: 'Fedaa Majzoub should be hunted down, arrested and tried as a war criminal'.

Racist terror and surplus populations

Racist terror and surplus populations. Human sacrifice continues
AP photo

By Mark Lennon

All capitalism has to offer black Americans is the ghetto, the prison or the barrel of a gun.  Today, it seems impossible to look at the news without seeing another report of a black man murdered by police. Lynching may have changed its form somewhat, but the essential relation underlying it has not changed. The human sacrifice continues.  Many have pointed out the racist dimension of this violence, but it is not true that the United States is a consistent white supremacist society.  It harms whites every day. In fact, to call the United States white supremacist is almost an apologetic. The United States is imperialist. It deploys a tactical white supremacism in its effort to reproduce the imperialist fundamentals. (This is an important lesson we can all get from CLR James The Black Jacobins-a most timely book for this moment.)

If we misrecognize this tactic as the enemy's objective we will be defeated. In order to eliminate the afrophobic barbarisms that are the death warrant for this society, we need to call the thing by its right name.  Having done this, we are in a position to destroy the generative mechanism.  The explanation of history is economic not biological or racial.  If we lose sight of imperialism, we miss the connection between national racism and global racism. We also will construct movements that can easily be divided and conquered when the focus of imperialist aggression shifts to another group of people.

Position of black population in American history is well known

The contradictory position of the black population in American history is well known. On the one hand, black people are the excluded other in a white supremacist State. On the other hand, black people form an essential element without which American society could not exist. The black population functions as an internal third world for American imperialism-a hyper exploited stratum of workers and a comprador minority. From a more limited national economic perspective, this role can be characterized as that of a 'surplus population.' Marx defined long ago the role played by the surplus population in a capitalist society. Their role is to make up an industrial reserve army, to be available for capital just in case it needs to rapidly expand operations or break a strike. This surplus population is compelled to live in stressful and precarious conditions to ensure their willing availability for capital's purposes in a pinch.  No group would ever volunteer for this role. Yet at the same time, the filling of this role is absolutely necessary for the continuation of capitalist society. Given this state of affairs, it is obvious that the capitalist will need to use brute force compulsion to ensure that this role is imposed.  During the latter half of the twentieth century, there was struggle to contest this arrangement; that struggle came to a premature termination in a wave of political violence-targeted assassinations and police terror.

The dissolution of the Soviet Union as the major competitor of American imperialism opened up new possibilities for the most retrograde elements of the imperial ruling class. Fueled by a round of primitive accumulation carried out in Russia and Eastern Europe under the slogan of 'democratization' and 'liberalization' the imperialists seemed to be omnipotent. The sole superpower and so on.   There seemed to exist an atmosphere of impunity in which capitalist crime would go wholly unchallenged for lack of a principled opposition. This Imperial hubris of this time is aptly summed up in the infamous Thatcherite slogan "there is no alternative."  The content of this Imperial hubris is the idea that the planetary masses are a captive audience, a population that can be abused with no limits. The architects of this restoration cherished a certain nostalgia for the glory days of what they might've called classical economic liberalism-the glory days of primitive accumulation, the pillaging of the New World, and of Africa, when the free market ran wild. They claimed to be releasing the "animal spirits" or capitalist enterprise, but the only "animal spirits" released were those of the parasite.

The American economy has shifted from industrial production to rent extraction-finance, insurance, and real estate. This imperialist financialization has been ongoing since the 1970s with the result that working class jobs have become ever more scarce and underpaid. In response to the loss of productive jobs, a carcereal economy has been developed-across the rust belt, the prison replaced the factory as the source of income. The raw materials for this flesh trade were supplied by the operation of the "war on drugs"-mandatory minimum sentences, intensified policing, racial profiling and so on. The operations of this "war" also intersected with the interests of the real estate "developers" who wanted to expropriate black neighborhoods for gentrification projects. Through the use of police terror, populations could be immiserated until they vacated what had become an unlivable hostile environment.

From out of the situation, the hint of a way forward emerges in the form of the BGF (Black Guerrilla Family).  This group is known to the bourgeois media as a prison gang, but their political lineage is more complex.  According to the Florida Department of Corrections,  "The BGF is the most politically oriented of the major prison gangs...They were formed as a Marxist/Maoist/Leninist revolutionary organization with these goals: [to e]radicate racism, [to s]truggle to maintain dignity in prison, [and to o]verthrow the United States government." [1]  This is a militant anti-imperialist organization which is willing to assess the social situation for what it is. They should awaken us to the magnitude of the struggle in which we are involved and the type of organized resistance that is called for.  These police murders are a moment of truth for the post-1989 world.  It has failed. The American Imperium is in crisis-the ruling class has proven itself incompetent and a state of lawlessness has emerged. A global revolutionary situation is emerging, and the answer for activists and progressives may very well come from the cell blocks...

Does Too Much Screen Time Equal Insomnia For Kids?

What are the links between screen time and sleep time and what can you do about it?

Sleep.

From the newborn haze, to the toddler trials, to the preschool-years preposterous bedtime demands list, getting our kids to sleep can often seem like a full-time job. Most parents can tell sleep battle stories that would make the hardest commando soldier curl up and weep. While we’d all do almost anything to get our kids to sleep better and longer, could we be contributing to our kids sleep problems?

The links between screen time and sleep in young kids has been the subject of a recent research project conducted by Melbourne’s La Trobe University's School of Psychology.

Researcher Amanda Richdale looked at 101 children aged between two and five years and investigated a variety of sleep issues such as difficulty falling asleep, night time waking and early morning risers. The study looked at a variety of factors that could affect kids’ sleep, including things like being too hot or cold in the bedroom and screen time.

While 95% of the kids in the study spent an average of one hour of TV per day and up to 19 minutes of electronic device time per day, some kids in the study were spending over three hours per day in front of the screen – which put them at a much greater risk of developing sleep problems.

Kids that were too hot or too cold in their bedrooms at night were also more likely to have sleep disturbances.

''Parents should make sure children are sleeping at a comfortable temperature and that they don't have things like TVs, computers and iPads in their bedrooms or spend too much time watching them,'' Professor Richdale told the SMH and recommended 11 – 12 hours of sleep per ight for two – five year olds.

Our very own resident tech expert, Dr Kristy recommends 90 minutes of screen free time before bed, for everyone – kids and adults included.

How do your kids sleep? Have you ever thought too much screen time has affected their sleep?

US Fox in charge of the Ukraine chicken hawk coup bank?

US FOX in charge of the Ukraine chicken hawk coup bank?. 54243.jpeg

The other day, I learned that Hungarian born U.S. billionaire hedge fund 'philanthropist' George Soros was a candidate (one of five Fed hucksters) to head bankster Ukraine's Central Bank. This is not exactly earth shattering news given that the lying cabal that is in charge (illegally) of the Kiev junta is a direct result of the U.S. State Department's planned murderous coup d'état which occurred this past February.

And you can be sure that Soros' black hands were involved in that covert operation by way of his NGO contributions; no doubt about it. Georgie, has even gloated publicly about his 'successes' there.

Those of you not already familiar this scoundrel, Soros is well renowned for his 'storied' experiences worldwide using financial speculation to subvert sovereign currencies which in turn subjugated those governments as vassal states to the U.S. hegemonic overlords. Great Britain comes to mind. During the early 1990's in Soros' opinion the U.K. pound was 'overvalued'. First, who the heck is he that his opinion

should matter in re the actions of any sovereign state? That germane question did not matter though; neither did it stop Soros from short-selling the pound sterling to the tune of 10 billion.

In the end, all of the King's horses and all the Exchequer's men could not stem the retreating tide of the pound's fall. The Crown and their countrymen tried though: the Bank of England burned through a couple of billion dollars of foreign exchange reserves; but it was pound foolish. After the chips fell, Soros' pocketed $ 1 billion U.S.; that was his tidy 'profit' for a couple days 'work'.

The British people did not fare as well. On the contrary, many of them, my friends included, lost not only their shirts. More important, many Brits surrendered their homes too due to increased mortgage costs. I was there...

Soros did not shed a tear; he invested his ill-gotten gains for what else, but more filthy lucre: real gold. Sleight-of hand dealings have been Georgie's hallmark since youth. Right after the close of WW II in Europe, Soros and his father 'volunteered' to sanitize war ravaged Berlin; but for a fee of course. By the wheel borough load father and son stacked the stiffs (corpses) of fellow countrymen for final disposal at the city's dump (or incinerator). Dirty beginnings; but Georgie sure knew how to rise above the stench.

Not satisfied with his day's wages, Soros took to moonlighting. Under cover of darkness he dabbled in the' black market'; he panhandled Marlboros, booze, medicines, and practically anything in short supply; which in turn led to his first forays in 'currency swaps'. Astute fellow that he already was, Soros demanded payment in the hard currencies: U.S. dollar was preferred. Any Deutsch marks that he already scrounged were quickly disposed for those same dollars; the night before. This all makes sense (in a perverted way) if one considers who Soros really is.

A rough translation of his Hungarian name into English yields 'Brewer'. That's where any similarity stops. Soros is not in the business of promoting elixirs; far from it. For sure he is not concerned with anyone's health, especially amongst the 'little people'. Soros' gig is manipulation; always has been; favorite prey: the securities and money markets. He is a conjurer too. Without any compunction Soros is quick to defend his avarice. And these days he has made it to the big leagues as far as high finance is concerned.

States side, Georgie is revered. His hedge funds have reached their zenith. As expected, his currency short-selling scheme continues to deliver big profits and huge dividends for the fund members. In addition to the British pound, other sovereign currencies have fallen by the wayside and the corresponding governments have all taken a big bath trying to defend against his covert financial takeovers: the Japanese Yen and Argentine peso are prime examples.

In fact, Soros' Ponzi scheme is the paradigm that others of his same ilk try to emulate. He is regular on the 'talk show' circuit. His exculpatory opines came fast and furious; those op-ed pieces were even featured in the high powered business rags like the Wall Street Journal and Forbes Magazine. At one point, Georgie even offered to write the legislation to tighten the largely unregulated derivatives markets so that their reporting gave at least the appearance of 'fairness'. How he managed to spew that 'whopper' to his audience with a straight face, smacks of, well, just more avarice.

These days, Soros has not amended his wicked ways, nor has he curbed his insatiable appetite for dirty/easy money (despite his assurances to governments). Can you say: Dateline Argentina; déjà vu all over again? To wit, Georgie and his minions have managed to 'persuade' a New York judge to enforce their creditor interest claims on Argentine junk bonds (monopoly money) that he 'lawfully' purchased; but for pennies on the thousands. If Soros is allowed to proceed with this ruling the Argentine

government will default on its debt; again. By extension, the South American country will soon tip further from its current recession into collapse; a long depression follows. Thanks, boy Georgie!

What does this all portend for Ukraine? If those criminal dunces in Kiev don't wake up fast and smell the napalm, generous George in no time flat will raid the treasury and in the process rape and strip the country's huge swath of natural resources clean to the bare ground. After all, Georgie was the first to coin the popular phrase: American greed; don't come home without many more grubby greenbacks!

Global Peace, War and Xmas: Killing Goes On

Global Peace, War and Xmas: Killing Goes On. 54242.jpeg

By Mahboob A. Khawaja, PhD.

"The hell of human suffering, evil and oppression is paved with good intentions. The men who have most injured and oppressed humanity, who have most deeply sinned against it, were according to their standards and their conscience good men; what was bad in them, what wrought moral evil and cruelty, treason to truth and progress, was not at all in their intentions, in their purpose, in their personal character, but in their opinions."

(Professor Robert Briffault. The Making of Humanity. London, 1918)

Leaders across the globe use the Xmas and the New Year's Eve as convenient opportunities to echo festive messages of peace and optimism as if they long the humanity. Despite the inherent wickedness of warmongers and institutions, the global community is tolerant and open to listening to the abstract and absurd alike. Analyzing critically and objectively, there is hardly any international leader capable of articulating an effective and credible message of hope and change under the present global affairs. No matter where you look to the East and West, South and North, forces of darkness and evil go unchecked as if the mankind was just numbers and digits and nothing else in reality.

How strange in the 21st century knowledge-based informed age, large segments of humanity are being targeted by planned violence, displacement, aerial bombardment, traumatization, displacement  and daily bloodbaths all extensions of the US-led bogus war on terrorism. The sadistic madness appears at its peak. America and its puppet Arab rulers are enlarging the scope of the nominal sectarian divides - Arab killing Arab, Muslims committing massacres of fellow Muslims, and Shias-Sunnis engaged in cold blooded murders. They are not fighting for truth, Islam or to protect the rights and dignity of the people. Rationality cries out loud against perpetuated insanity over the entire Arabian landscape. Nobody knows what is the end game? They are active and cash paid agents of death squads manned either by foreigners, or Iran, ISIL, Syria or Iraqis.  Now, it is the coalition of the willing of 12 countries actively engaged to destroy the living humanity to ensure improved management of the oil supplies and to counteract any possible threats of imagined extremism in the Arab Middle East. There is no distinction of rights or wrongs. Who will be hanged and who will be spared, the coalition Arab leaders are uncertain about their futuristic destiny. To post 9/11 time, Al-Qaeda was the name and stigma; now it is newly formed ISIL - a convenient replacement. Everywhere, no question asked, the few authoritarian Arab rulers lacking legitimacy and the US dominated NATO members enjoy free access to victimize the innocent Arab people. The American inquisition explains Professor Michel Chossudovsky (9/11 and the "American Inquisition", Global Research, 9/11/2008):

The American Inquisition as an ideological construct which is, in many regards, similar to the inquisitorial social order prevailing in France and Spain during the Middle Ages. The inquisition, which started in France in the 12th century, was used as a justification for conquest and military intervention. An inquisitorial doctrine turns realities upside down. It is a social order based on lies and fabrications. But because these lies emanate from the highest political authority and are part of a widely held "consensus", they invariably remain unchallenged. And those who challenge the inquisitorial order or in any way oppose America's military or national security agenda are themselves branded as "conspiracy theorists" or outright terrorists.

Global Leaders and Institutions  are a Menace to Peace

The UNO and its major organs are spectators and debating clubs subject to approval of the Five Permanent Members of the Security Council. The idea of the UNO is self propagated prophecy that no longer has the persuasive power to stop aggression by one of its own member states. The mankind is left with no rational choice to challenge the institutionalized extremism except to cry out against the perpetuated insanity flourishing in the Arab Middle East an elsewhere. If we believe to be living in One World, the One Humanity must stand together to oppose the cruel reality against the human nature and expectation for peacemaking. American war strategy is aimed at large scale deaths and destructions of the entire Arab region enabling American corporations to attain direct control over the oil reserves and exports. Another vital aim of the strategy is to camouflage the freedom of Palestine. America is not engaged in wars of humanitarian principles and values of any kind or to promote liberty and democracy. Those opposing the American intervention in Iraq-Syria know well how much America is feared and hated by the common Arabian folks. President Obama does not have a strategy to "defeat and destroy ISIL" in the Arab Middle East. If he claims to have crafted a new strategy by launching air strikes on the civilian population across Iraq-Syria and enlisting coalition of the worst than useless Arab authoritarian leaders, he is in a political quagmire of his own. America will lose more by military interventions in the complex societal conflicts overwhelmingly dominating the Arab world. Professor Michel Chossudovsky ("America's Holy Crusade against the Muslim World. Global Research: 8/30/2010) points out that:  A "war of religion" is unfolding, with a view to justifying a global military crusade. In the inner consciousness of many Americans, the "holy crusade" against Muslims is justified. While President Obama may uphold freedom of religion, the US inquisitorial social order has institutionalized patterns of discrimination, prejudice and xenophobia directed against Muslims.

American news media reports of an estimated 32, 000 innocent citizens are gunned down yearly across the US homeland. If America cannot deal with its own domestic problems of security, unusual violence, killings of the innocents, natural disasters and fear-mongering politics, how could it be helpful to few puppet clients in the Arab world?  One wonders, what went wrong with America?  William Boardman ("A Country At War With An Illusion." Information Clearing House: 8/19/2013) spells out that America is at war with itself:  "We are waging war on terrorism even as we embody terrorism.  ...No wonder we seem sometimes to be at war with ourselves, and have been for most of the 21st century....No American Under 12 Has Lived In A Country At Peace....America's Main Enemy Is Nameless, Shapeless, "Associated Forces"... The American Enemies List Is Decided Anonymously and Secretly.

The warmongers go freely to massacre innocent women, children and rape the youngsters - a prevalent culture of infested crimes across the Arab regions. Despite moral and intellectual capacity, nobody takes up initiatives for talks to conduct conflict management and crisis management. Leaders appear more of insane egoistic character than peacemakers. They are unmindful of the consequences of their own vicious thought and priorities simply to double the imagery of popularity number games. The question is, how would such large scale military operations achieve any aims of peace to avoid future mishaps?  For over a decade, in Iraq, Afghanistan and its spill-over drone war into Northern Pakistan tribal areas, millions and millions of people have been targeted, displaced and charcoaled by the US failing war strategy.

Towards Conflict Management

All man-made conflicts are manageable through dialogue and peaceful negotiations. If the coalition of the willing had working intelligence, they should engage ISIL in a political dialogue to determine the future of the Arab Middle East. Obviously, ISIL's cold-blooded killings of few foreign prisoners cannot be accepted as precepts of the Islamic behavior and values of the Muslim world, but the group is gaining ground and attracting large number of recruits across the Arab countries.  President Obama claimed diplomacy to deal with global problems and nations with varied perspectives. But nothing is initiated out of the fixed strategy against ISIL. "It is Perfectly Reasonable to Negotiate with Villains like ISIS So, Why Don't We Do It to Save Some Lives" The Independent: 9/28/2014), asks reputable international journalist Robert Fisk. President Obama said, No at the UN and adds, we do not negotiate with Evil. An impartial observer would question President Obama if the Evil is one-sided.  No wonder, why America is using the logic of power and not the power of logic to respond to a critical global humanitarian crisis.  Wars suck out positive human thinking and creative energies to articulate a sustainable future. How should the global humanity view the contemporary Arab societies, their war-torn bloody cultures operated by foreign mercenaries and few authoritarian dictators?  What kind of message of civility, moral and intellectual values do they convey to the watchful eyes of the global humanity?

War Negates the Essence of Xmas and Peacemaking

When was the last time any cruel monsters opted for a public dialogue to co-exist with rational people? Would Bashar al-Assad listen to voices of reason? Do other authoritarian Arab rulers show any flexibility to share power with the people?  Most Arab rulers lack the intellectual capacity and political legitimacy to conduct any public negotiations with the opposing parties. The auspices occasion of the Xmas and New Year stand for peace and co-existence amongst diverse segments of human societies. The continuing bombing of the innocents, sectarian bloodbaths and aggressive military operations contradict the spirit and meaning of the Xmas. The crush for war is instinctively part of human ignorance and arrogance. Wars contradict the human Nature and the Nature of the living Universe.

It is co-existence and peace that brings people and nations together and helps to flourish life and relationships befitting to the human Nature and the Nature of planet Earth and the larger Universe. Civilizations grow out of peace not conflicts. Dave Lindorff ("Eleven Reason's I'm Ashamed to Be an American." Counterpunch: 12/10/2014) is a founding member of ThisCantBeHappening!, and is a contributor to Hopeless: Barack Obama and the Politics of Illusion, and extends courageous statement on the current global affairs:  I am ashamed to be a US citizen. This doesn't come easily, because having lived abroad and seen some pretty nasty places in my time, I know there are a lot of great things about this country, and a lot of great people who live here, but lately, I've reached the conclusion that the US is a sick and twisted country, in which the bad far outweighs the good..... It's not just the latest release of a heavily redacted report on the Bush/Cheney administration's deliberate program of torture, launched in 2001 in the wake of 9-11, and carried on for years against not just alleged terrorists, but even against people known or suspected to be completely innocent of anything. It's that nothing has been done, or likely will be done, to punish those who authorized and advocated for these war crimes and crimes against humanity.

If there were any responsible global moral, spiritual and intellectual powerhouses, they should have taken initiatives to find peaceful ways and means to end the authoritarian hostilities and massacres of the innocent civilians. The history speaks loud and clear that few powerful rulers with individualistic absolutism and most often, mentally retarded persons have always driven the mankind to large scale slaughters, victimization, deprivation and long term scars of unforgettable consequences - the massacres of innocent humanity and destruction of irreversible human habitats - the Two World Wars never ended - the killing goes on and on across the Middle East. God the Creator of the Universe knows who is peacemaker and who warmonger is. The messages of Torah, Bible and The Qura'an are clear and candid: God favors those who strive to bridge the human differences, bring people together and make peace. The humanity is at great loss even the Xmas occasion could not change the favorite perversion of the blood thirsty leaders to rethink of their role and aims within the global mankind.

Before Christmas turkey, trees, ornaments

How famous Georgian

Georgian Christmas at the Dennis Severs House

What was the holiday season as before turkeys and trees? Caroline McGhie visit the house in Spitalfields breaks Dennis particular

It's hard to imagine before Christmas Victorian has his hands on it and wrapped sentimentality and garlands. But there is a very old house in Spitalfields arthritic London where you can still enjoy the experience. Gateway back in Folgate Street, everything is cold and dark. The only heat comes from the chimneys, the only light and flickering candles filter gray sadness when the wings are open.

There is a smell of the forest floor and spices. David Milne in his baker's apron, sewing fir garlands dotted with clementines to hang from the ceiling of the room. He is the curator of this extraordinary home, cared for 15 years and sometimes sleeps here.

This garland of fruit, wood and flowers that resemble wood carvings decorated 18th century Grinling Gibbons, who wove their magic in Hampton Court, the Cathedral of St. Paul and Blenheim Palace. "The use of green was pagan and returned to classical mythology," David said. The Christmas tree as we know, did not get his first role until the coverage Illustrated London News is Queen Victoria in 1848, so there was no turning back.

David is preparing for a night in which historians, fans of the Georgian era, local celebrities - including TV presenter Dan Cruickshank and local artists, perhaps, Gilbert and George - come. Jeanette Winterson, owner of green coffee slow food in Spitalfields Market, located so you can not be there. Wassail Bowl, a huge trunk, grated scarlet silk curves down the stairs, and gingerbread men among kitchen utensils copper helps create a festive atmosphere.

The piece de resistance in the dining room is a beautiful black swan mounted on a ceramic substrate with a chandelier above that David has with fresh oranges between fixtures. No raisins, nuts, candied fruits and grenades. "What we take for granted today were tremendous luxury and made in North Africa and Spain," he said. The famous house a mix of periods of King George, William IV and during the reign of Queen Victoria.

The Georgians loved their gelatins and puddings. David setbacks as mussels and small castles copper melting jelly flashing in the dark as defective gems. "The cakes were made of ox tongue and other meats that can put in our hands, fruits and spices. Later, the meat was abandoned and only had fruit pies, spices and fat in them." King George was supposed to have eaten plum pudding, as part of its first monarch of Christmas dinner in 1714, which was known as the "sausage king".

How to Sleep like a Baby

It’s 3:00 a.m. where are you? Most people would probably be asleep. However, for a large majority of people, it is near impossible for them to get a good nights rest. Without it, they are unable to focus well, they have low energy, and let’s face it, they are usually in a not so good mood. Is there anything that the sleep deprived can do in order to help give their body the much needed sleep it needs? Aside from counting sheep, which rarely works, try some of the suggestions below.

How to Sleep like a Baby

First, start out by examining your bedroom for sleep distractions. Sleep distractions would be such things as clutter, the color of the paint, the noise level, etc. If your room is painted in bright, electrifying colors, you may want to consider painting it a soothing cool color. A pale green or a soothing blue would be good choices. You can’t expect to be able to sleep if the paint in your bedroom is so bright that it looks like an airport runway.

If your room is cluttered, consider scheduling a spring cleaning day and get rid of all those unwanted sleep thieves. If a room is cluttered, it gives our mind more things to focus on and think about during the night instead of sleep. Your bedroom is supposed to be your sanctuary, and let’s face it, who wants piles of bills or junk mail in their sanctuary? Not too many people.

As far as the noise level goes, this is different for each person. Some people enjoy some form of noise while they sleep and may even purchase a noise machine, while others have to have quiet. If you fall into the latter category, try purchasing some heavy drapes to see if they block out any of the unwanted noise. While the drapes probably won’t get rid of every unwanted noise, you will notice a big difference.

Next, try not to exercise before going to bed. I’m not saying don’t exercise at all, because exercise is good for us, but we all know that exercise releases endorphins which amp us up. You can’t expect to be able to go to sleep if you feel like you could run a marathon. Try to keep exercise to either early in the mornings or to around four hours before bedtime. This will give your body time to calm down and will help you to drift off to sleep much easier.

Another suggestion to help you get a good nights sleep would be to take a nice warm bath just before you are ready to go to bed. The warm bath will not only help you to relax physically, but it will also give your brain some time to unwind as well. It doesn’t have to be a long bath, just 10 or 15 minutes should do the trick. As you are letting the water out of the tub, picture your troubles and cares being washed down the drain. A mind that is not burdened with troubles is a mind that can easily drift off to sleep.

Lighting is another issue that effects sleep. If your bedroom window lets the light of a nearby street light into your bedroom, you might want to try some of those room darkening curtains to eliminate that problem. If you can’t find any or can’t afford them, try putting a quilt up instead. If your curtain rods are sturdy, they will usually hold up the extra weight of the quilt. Either of these two things will help darken your bedroom and help you drift off to what could be the best nights sleep you’ve had in a while.

Of course, don’t forget to flip your mattress every so often to keep it from getting worn. However, if your mattress is not in good shape and you can’t afford to buy a new one (because we know they don’t come cheap), consider buying a mattress topper. This will give you the sense of a new mattress, but will cost you a fraction of the price. Toppers come in a variety of styles, and it is up to you to find the one that suits your needs.

The last tip, try and keep the temperature in your bedroom at a comfortable level. You don’t want the temperature too hot or too cold. You want it just right. Again, it is up to you, as an individual, to decide what your perfect temperature is. Try these few tips out and see if they help you get the peaceful nights slumber your body has been missing. Pleasant dreams sleep deprived.

Christmas Column

Christmas Column. Merry Christmas

By Paul Craig Roberts

My traditional Christmas column goes back to sometime in the 1990s when I was a newspaper columnist. It has been widely reprinted at home and abroad. Every year two or three readers write to educate me that religion is the source of wars and persecutions. These readers confuse religion with mankind's abuse of institutions, religious or otherwise. The United States has democratic institutions and legal institutions to protect civil liberties. Nevertheless, we now have a police state. Shall I argue that democracy and civil liberty are the causes of police states?

Some readers also are confused about hypocrisy. There is a vast difference between proclaiming moral principles that one might fail to live up to and proclaiming immoral principles that are all too easy to keep.

Liberty is a human achievement. We have it, or had it, because those who believed in it fought to achieve it. As I explain in my Christmas column, people were able to fight for liberty because Christianity empowered the individual.

The other cornerstone of our culture is the Constitution. Indeed, the United States is the Constitution. Without the Constitution, the United States is a different country, and Americans a different people. This is why assaults on the Constitution and assaults on Christianity are assaults on all of us. There is not much that we can do about these assaults, but we should not through ignorance enable the assaults or believe the government's claim that safety requires the curtailment of civil liberty.

In a spirit of goodwill, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a successful New Year.
Paul Craig Roberts and Pravda.Ru

The Greatest Gift For All

Christmas is a time of traditions. If you have found time in the rush before Christmas to decorate a tree, you are sharing in a relatively new tradition. Although the Christmas tree has ancient roots, at the beginning of the 20th century only 1 in 5 American families put up a tree. It was 1920 before the Christmas tree became the hallmark of the season. Calvin Coolidge was the first President to light a national Christmas tree on the White House lawn.

Gifts are another shared custom. This tradition comes from the wise men or three kings who brought gifts to baby Jesus. When I was a kid, gifts were more modest than they are now, but even then people were complaining about the commercialization of Christmas. We have grown accustomed to the commercialization. Christmas sales are the backbone of many businesses. Gift giving causes us to remember others and to take time from our harried lives to give them thought.

The decorations and gifts of Christmas are one of our connections to a Christian culture that has held Western civilization together for 2,000 years. In our culture the individual counts. This permits an individual person to put his or her foot down, to take a stand on principle, to become a reformer and to take on injustice.

This empowerment of the individual is unique to Western civilization. It has made the individual a citizen equal in rights to all other citizens, protected from tyrannical government by the rule of law and free speech. These achievements are the products of centuries of struggle, but they all flow from the teaching that God so values the individual's soul that he sent his son to die so we might live. By so elevating the individual, Christianity gave him a voice.

Formerly only those with power had a voice. But in Western civilization people with integrity have a voice. So do people with a sense of justice, of honor, of duty, of fair play. Reformers can reform, investors can invest, and entrepreneurs can create commercial enterprises, new products and new occupations.

The result was a land of opportunity. The United States attracted immigrants who shared our values and reflected them in their own lives. Our culture was absorbed by a diverse people who became one.

In recent decades we have lost sight of the historic achievement that empowered the individual. The religious, legal and political roots of this great achievement are no longer reverently taught in high schools, colleges and universities or respected by our government. The voices that reach us through the millennia and connect us to our culture are being silenced by "political correctness" and "the war on terror." Prayer has been driven from schools and Christian religious symbols from public life. Constitutional protections have been diminished by hegemonic political ambitions. Indefinite detention, torture, and murder are now acknowledged practices of the United States government. The historic achievement of due process has been rolled back. Tyranny has re-emerged.

Diversity at home and hegemony abroad are consuming values and are dismantling the culture and the rule of law. There is plenty of room for cultural diversity in the world, but not within a single country. A Tower of Babel has no culture. A person cannot be a Christian one day, a pagan the next and a Muslim the day after. A hodgepodge of cultural and religious values provides no basis for law - except the raw power of the pre-Christian past.

All Americans have a huge stake in Christianity. Whether or not we are individually believers in Christ, we are beneficiaries of the moral doctrine that has curbed power and protected the weak. Power is the horse ridden by evil. In the 20th century the horse was ridden hard, and the 21st century shows an increase in pace. Millions of people were exterminated in the 20th century by National Socialists in Germany and by Soviet and Chinese communists simply because they were members of a race or class that had been demonized by intellectuals and political authority. In the beginning years of the 21st century hundreds of thousands of Muslims in seven countries have already been murdered and millions displaced, because their religion does not submit to Washington's hegemony.

Power that is secularized and cut free of civilizing traditions is not limited by moral and religious scruples. V.I. Lenin made this clear when he defined the meaning of his dictatorship as "unlimited power, resting directly on force, not limited by anything." Washington's drive for hegemony over US citizens and the rest of the world is based entirely on the exercise of force and is resurrecting unaccountable power.

Christianity's emphasis on the worth of the individual makes such power as Lenin claimed, and Washington now claims, unthinkable. Be we religious or be we not, our celebration of Christ's birthday celebrates a religion that made us masters of our souls and of our political life on Earth. Such a religion as this is worth holding on to even by atheists.

As we enter into 2015, Western civilization, the product of thousands of years of striving, hangs in the balance. Degeneracy is everywhere before our eyes. As the West sinks into tyranny, will Western peoples defend their liberty and their souls, or will they sink into the tyranny, which again has raised its ugly and all devouring head?
