Find out why they say this app does for meditation what Jamie Oliver has done for food.
When you’re a busy parent or carer, the idea of setting aside time to practice some mindfulness meditation can seem like a ridiculously difficult ask.
In fact, the very idea of it can just make you more stressed, as you add it to the seemingly endless to-do list!
But what about a mindfulness meditation app for busy people, that’s been designed as a gym membership for the mind?
What’s it About: Headspace is a mindfulness meditation app designed for busy people. It’s a 10-minute a day ‘exercise program’ for your mind that aims to make you healthier and happier.
The Good Bits: We like the simple, non-intimidating interface. There’s no whiff of crystals, dolphins, gurus or incense.
The hardest part of creating a good habit is just starting at all – that’s why we like the simplicity and ease of the initial ‘Take 10’ program. It makes the ‘starting’ easier, by breaking it down into a simple program of ten-minutes a day for ten days.
But if even that is too much of a commitment, you can just as easily tap into the Headspace singles section, where you can choose your own meditation, from two minutes to one hour. These are great as they have practical ways of applying mindfulness to everyday situations – i.e. mindfulness exercises for while you’re doing the cooking - “lovely jubbley”, as Jamie Oliver would say.
But the greatest bit about this app? The S.O.S. sessions, which are mini-meditations that help in those ‘meltdown moments’.
The Not So Good Bits: If you’re into crystals, dolphins, gurus or incense you may be disappointed – there’s none of that to be found.
What It Teaches: Mindfulness Meditation has been proven to help with stress, anxiety, relationships and focus.
Most Suitable Age Range: This app is aimed at adults, but we reckon it could be a great one for teens too. There are plans in the pipeline to create Headspace for Kids, which will be suitable for kids as young as four.
Tech Info: Available via the website or via iOS and Android apps
How Much: Free for the initial trial period, which includes the ‘Take 10’ program. Then, the app and website works on subscription. You can subscribe month by month for US$12.95, or if you sign up for longer periods, i.e. a year or two, the price drops.
