Everything You Need to Know About: We Heart It

When ‘Like’ is just not enough, love up your social media with We Heart It.

What is We Heart It?

We Heart It is a social media platform that is based on images and image sharing. We like to think of it as Pinterest and Tumblr’s love child. The emphasis here is on uplifting and inspiring image sharing.

The site has a simple focus: it allows users to identify and share inspirational internet images and to quickly save and organise those images. The entire focus is on images – there is no text or comments on the site.

How did it come about? We Heart It was started by Brazilian, Fabio Giolito as a way to aggregate images that he found inspiring during his graphic design studies course. From these humble beginnings, We Heart It is now an internet behemoth.

Who’s using it? We Heart It generates 20 million global unique visitors per month, with 80 percent of its daily usage now comes from mobile.

The site is particularly popular with tweens, teens and young women under 25 - in fact 50% of users are teens. We Heart It’s President Dave Williams told Tech Crunch that, “We Heart users are young, style conscious and style interested, (and) fashion interested users from around the world – it’s primarily women”

What's good about it? Overwhelmingly, the site is focused on positivity. It’s been called by the Huffington Post as “One of the happiest places on the internet”.

If you’re a teen, the site is attractive simply because, unlike Grandpa Facebook with its ageing demographic, We Heart It is populated by the young and cool.

What should I be concerned about? As far as social media goes, We Heart It is pretty safe. The positive thing about it is, unlike Instagram, Facebook or Tumblr, We Heart It users can only upload pictures – there is no capability for comments or captions. Some say that this can avoid cyber bullying.

Most suitable age range? The most popular age range using the site is teenagers aged 13 – 18 years.
