Kids App of The Week: Leo’s Pad

OMG! This is THE must-have educational app for your kids.

What’s It About: Leo’s Pad is an award-winning, interactive iPad series in which kids join a young Leonardo da Vinci (Leo), and his friends on awesome adventures filled with impressive learning games.

The Good Bits: Where do we start? If you’re a parent who’s really into educational apps, this is a MUST to download.

The app has been developed by a crack team of Stanford Researchers who have more PhD’s between them than many of us have had hot dinners. They include experts in developmental psychology, early childhood education, performance-based assessment, and game-based learning, and most of them are also parents to young kids. While this academic-heavy weighting may all sound a bit much, what makes this app a winner is that an Emmy Award-winning creative director has finessed all of the ‘smarts’ into animated sequences that look like they’ve come straight from a high-end kids movie.

The Not So Good Bits: Leo’s Pad has a partner app designed for parents called ‘Learning Mosaic’. This app automatically syncs with your kids progress in Leo’s Pad, and grades and ranks your kids abilities in areas such as knowledge, creative skills, physical skills, thinking skills, social skills and even character. Depending on your point of view, the idea of an app ranking your kids ‘character’ and ‘social skills’ can be a little hard to swallow.

What It Teaches: The app focuses on educational games that teach maths, literacy, and social skills. All games feature ‘adaptive gameplay, meaning that the difficulty level of each game adjusts to each child’s progress.

Most Suitable Age Range: Kids aged between 3 – 5 years.

Tech Info: iOS only

How Much: There’s a free initial download which allows you to access Chapter 1 out of the 6 chapters in the game. The cost of downloading the other chapters is normally $24.99, but is 60% off until 30th April 2015.
