It feels as though Tesla and their eccentric CEO, Elon Musk, are always in the news – and that’s not a bad thing.
This time around, it’s exciting news for all Tesla fans. Elon Musk has exclusively revealed to UK-based car news site, Auto Express, new details and the name of the upcoming new Tesla model.
The new model will be called the Model III. And while the Model S stands for sedan and the Model X for crossover, Musk revealed that the company wanted to initially call the new model the Model E, but Ford had some objections over the name, as they wanted to build a car called Model E.
However, if the company got away with keeping the name Model E, the Tesla sequence of cars would spell out an, umm, interesting word.
Put together, the Tesla cars would then subsequently spell S, E, X. And it seems for Musk, this was a rather entertaining thought:
“We were going to call it model E for a while and then Ford sued us saying it wanted to use the Model E – I thought this is crazy, Ford’s trying to kill sex! So we’ll have to think of another name…[sic] the new model is going to be called Model III, we’ll have three bars to represent it and it’ll be S III X!” he said.
But besides its rather iterating name, the Model III looks to be a great electric car and, as Musk said, it was designed to rival the already existing BMW 3 Series.
According to Musk, the Model III will be cheaper batteries than it;s Model S and Model X siblings and will be Tesla’s most affordable car; carrying a price-tag of roughly $35 000.
As for the lactic part of the car, Musk said that realistically, he would say that the Model III would have an approximate 200 mile range.
As for when we can see a real life prototype of the car? Musk said that it likely that the Model II will be unveiled in two years time, in 2016, and will officially go on sale in 2017.
The new technology for the Model III will be developed by Tesla’s British engineering chief, Chris Porrit, who was previously an engineer at Aston Martin.
The Model III looks like it will definitely be making many waves when it finally gets unveiled – much like the Model S did and the the upcoming Model X is doing now. We’re excited.
