Should Kids Be Famous On Instagram?

Posing perfectly in his (rip-off) Ray Bans, Ryker Wixom oozes the charm and confidence of someone ten times his age.

And rightly so, because four-year-old Ryker, who has almost 150,000 followers on Instagram, is taking the kids fashion world by storm. Under the profile ministylehacker, Ryker, with the assistance of his Mum and stylist, Collette, produces budget conscious style-hacks for the fashion conscious under-fives.

For those who are wondering, a style-hack is basically copying high-end fashion trends with more affordable options. Meaning that, (as said on the ministylehacker website), “you don’t have to be rich to have style”. While Instagram is literally littered with fashionable tots to follow, Ryker’s Mum Collette originally got the idea for the ministylehacker website when she saw how expensive some of the Insta-fashion kids outfits were. With some pint-sized pin ups sporting Gucci and Burberry, Collette decided to see if she could get the same style, without the huge price tag.

What’s original about the site is that Ryker’s outfit is always presented next to the original adult fashion shot. We see him attempting to emulate the exact poses of the grown-up models, and whilst his posing is sometimes more cute than cutting-edge, the outfits are almost always exact replicas of the original. Mum Collette says she mostly sources the clothes for the ‘fashion shoots’ from what is already in Ryker’s wardrobe, or what she can get on sale at Gap, H&M and Old Navy. In the four months since the blog has been going, Collette says she has only gone shopping to create an outfit twice.

Collette says on her website, “I am a regular working mother that has a mortgage, car payments and college funds to finance.  My husband and I are in no way 1%ers.  We work hard to provide for our kids so that they can have an amazing life, filled with great memories and embarrassing photos.”

It certainly seems like these parents can tick off the embarrassing photos bit, but how does a four-year-old like being dressed up for fashion shoots? According to Collette, Ryker thinks it’s a game and doesn’t even know what social media is.

Who chooses the clothes that are worn by your preschooler? You, or them?
